Decodable Books

At Agility with Sound, we have reimagined what a decodable book can and should be.
Imagine a book that is made up of words the student can read effortlessly; a book with a focus on comprehension rather than decoding practice. A book that builds comprehension.
Imagine this in a book written for older students, on themes that tap into the imagination of this cohort.
Imagine how non-fiction can come alive for students when it is set in a story framework.
Imagine your students saying, as so many do, ‘But I haven’t finished reading this. Can I …?”
Our sequence follows the needs of older students.
Yes, phonics knowledge is usually limited, but much more importantly, much more commonly, much more restricting, so many students simply do not know what to do as words get longer, even if they know the relevant letter-sound correspondences.
Our sequence takes this into account. New phonic elements are added gradually, but words become longer at successive levels.

The books follow the Wordchain sequence precisely. Learn how to decode these words: what sounds the letters stand for, how to put them together in a word effortlessly and instantly, develop the skills, and then apply that knowledge to reading a book from the appropriate level.

After years of struggling to find suitable books for my teenage dyslexic daughter to engage with, I found Betsy’s. Instant success! My daughter loved the fact she was reading about real places and real people. Our battles ended – she wanted to keep reading. We worked our way through the levels and found Betsy very prompt and responsive in sending them to us. My only regret is not finding Betsy’s books sooner as they helped my daughter’s confidence so much.
On a personal note, I love your work. I have a degree in English literature, but it was literally the only programme that made sense to me as a busy mum. My daughter actually reads for pleasure now – Wordchain and your books were the groundwork for this.
The texts challenge my struggling older readers to use taught word recognition and decoding strategies authentically. Many of the books have a New Zealand culture and history focus and all texts provide lots of opportunities for language comprehension and critical thinking. The texts support students’ word study and phoneme-to-grapheme mapping at the lower level and advanced phonemic awareness and spelling pattern recognition at the higher level. Because the texts link to the Wordchain app, reading and spelling skill development becomes part of a structured literacy programme that is manageable for the teacher in the classroom setting.
